Mission Statement
Uchinadi-Kan SeiwaKai Dojo seeks to foster positive virtues in its colleagues and friends, and to cultivate a spirit upon which to build character, sincerity, integrity, perseverance and respect through sharing and learning. Learning and sharing with an open mind are essential in this endeavor.
Uchinadi-Kan SeiwaKai Dojo was born out of an overwhelming interest in the classical arts of Okinawa: Ryukyu Kempo and more specifically Goju-Ryu Karate. The term "uchinadi-kan" literally translates as "Okinawa(uchina) Karate(di) Center(kan). A deeper translation, based on the extensive research by Shihan McMains and others, is more precisely interpreted as "The center for the study of the original life protection arts of the people of Okinawa/Ryukyu". Therefore, Uchinadi-Kan was chosen to reflect the true nature or deep arts of all Okinawan martial systems when self-preservation was a high priority before these arts became a sport.
For numerous reasons which we will discuss further in this site, much of the knowledge contained in these and other classical styles is still unknown to many serious martial artists. Fortunately, due to sound, evidentiary knowledge and sciences readily available via the willingness to share by people of differing cultures, the internet, libraries and other irrefutable sources, the true nature of the ancient Eastern arts are slowly coming to light. With all this in mind, the Uchinadi-Kan SeiwaKai Dojo was established to preserve the original combative nature and warrior spirit of Okinawa's ancient martial arts.
Additionally, as the Okinawan arts were built upon the same time proven sciences that gave birth to the healing arts found throughout ancient Eastern Asia (India, Indochina, China, Philippines and others), the health and therapeutic benefits are far reaching. Since the development and study of the martial arts were centered on the understanding and application of these sciences and practices, the over-all health rewards are undeniable.
Uchinadi-Kan SeiwaKai Dojo is an internationally recognized and sanctioned martial arts' school and study group. Shihan McMains as director and chief instructor, is a member of SeiwaKai Canada, Japan Karate Federation/GojuKai, United States of America National Karate Federation and founding member of Dragon Society International.
